Aspalathus excelsa is an erect, much branched shrub or small tree that sometimes reaches 3 m. It is relatively short-lived, growing for about 10 years after fire. The plant is not spiny.
The habitat is sandy flats and lower slopes in the Hermanus to Stanford and maybe Caledon area. This plant is considered vulnerable early in the twenty first century due to habitat loss (Bean and Johns, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; www.plantzafrica.com).
