Adenandra brachyphylla flower

Adenandra brachyphylla plants grow flat-topped clusters of two to four flowers on long, hairless stalks at stem tips. The flowers are not sticky, their broad sepals sometimes purple-spotted.

The five porcelain white petals are more oblong than rounded along their sides, compared to many of the other Adenandra species; their tips are rounded though and (mostly) notched. The lower petal surface is variably reddish pink; on the upper petal surface a thin red line at the base emerges from the throat, partly bisecting the porcelain; very little of that being visible on the plant in this picture. The petals become up to 12 mm long. The five stamens alternating with red gland-tipped staminodes are hairy.

Bloomtime is midwinter to spring (Bean and Johns, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; iSpot).
