Disa intermedia is a terrestrial orchid growing leaves and flowers annually from its perennial tubular rootstock.

This species does not occur in South Africa, but near the border in Swaziland where it is endemic.

The plants grow in dry and stony montane grassland at elevations between 1200 m and 1500 m where convection rain falls in summer and the winters are cold. The habitat population is considered endangered early in the twenty first century from habitat degradation. Remembered in its distribution area as a common flower of times past, it has become rare (www.sntc.org.sz; www.sntc.org.sz).
