    Leaf whorls or tufts on the old Selago villicaulis stem are much denser than on the young one. The younger leaves added to the bigger whorls usually show the age difference in size. Leaf hairiness is variable.

    Old stems develop grey bark, while young ones are yellow-green and ridged (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
