Before elongation of the corolla tube, young Jamesbrittenia tortuosa buds are all about the calyx.
All plant parts visible in the photo are quite hairy. The young calyx changes colour in part from pale green to purplish as its lobes elongate and curve out, away from the emerging corolla that is roundish-tipped and dull yellow.
The pedicels on younger buds are initially creamy yellow or green, blackish purple on the more advanced bud. On the old flower in picture that has lost its corolla, the pedicel stayed dark. Only the beige sepals remain at its tip, still more or less in shape (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
