The typical structure in which Asparagus setaceus “leaves” grow, a large, flat, green triangle of many small leaflets, renders the plant attractive. Shiny green, red or black berries add to the plant’s allure.
All this brought about several uses of the common asparagus fern. These include planting in fences as a screen, as a houseplant or in hanging baskets for bright areas and in flower arrangements and lapel posies.
Wide usage and commercial popularity often exacerbate the invasive tendencies of strong-growing plants in areas beyond their natural habitat. This species is notorious in that respect in many parts of the world (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Wikipedia).
