Dianthus basuticus subsp. basuticus produces carnation flowers that rock here in the Drakensberg. Well above the plant’s own grassy leaves and all at roughly the same height, these flowers leave little to chance in terms of being noticed and hopefully serviced by pollinating insects (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2009; iNaturalist).
