The usually three to five deciduous, grey green leaves of Moraea ciliata often have crinkly, crisped or wavy margins as in the photo. The deeply channelled leaves overlap and clasp the inner ones at the base.
The blades are sparsely to densely hairy. The specific name, ciliata, is derived from the Latin word, cilium, meaning eyelid, referring to the eyelash-like hairy fringes on the leaf margins (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2009; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
