The dark, cushion-like annulus of this Huernia transvaalensis flower lacks the shiny surface sometimes seen. Some of the tiny papillae on the inner surface of the annulus are tipped with short purple hairs. The H. transvaalensis annulus is not spotted; its surface has been likened to raw beef liver.
The pale yellow markings on the red-purple corolla lobes have narrow irregular shapes, apart from one unusually large patch not often seen (White and Sloane, 1937).
