Satyrium longicauda var. jacottetianum flowers

The flowers of Satyrium longicauda var. jacottetianum differ from those of S. longicauda var. longicauda in the smaller size of their spurs that only reach 13 mm to 26 mm in length. Their lateral sepals are from 4 mm to 7 mm long. The lip above is bilobed in its reflexed flap. The ovaries are from 6 mm to 12 mm long. The bracts are concave in their reflexed upper parts.

Flower colour is pink to red, the darkest parts in the photo being the slightly curving ovaries, dark purple to almost black. Both sepals and petals have pink areas in the centre.

The non-resupinate flowers are sweetly scented. Flowering peaks from midsummer to early autumn (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; www.africanorchids.dk).
