Schizochilus cecilii subsp. transvaalensis drooping

Schizochilus cecilii subsp. transvaalensis produces a dense inflorescence up to 7 cm long. The flower spike tends to curve its tip down into a drooping position as in the photo. The cone-shaped inflorescence in picture has greenish, globular buds, their bracts short.

Up to forty flowers may be borne in an inflorescence. The flowers exude a vanilla fragrance in the afternoon. Flowering happens in summer (www.africanorchids.dk; www.merlin-trust.org.uk; www.orchidspecies.com).
