Selago divaricata old stems

The lower stems are distinctly woody on this old Selago divaricata bush, the pale grey bark fissured longitudinally. Age clearly does not inhibit the late winter and early spring flowering of a vigorous plant.
The photo was taken in August in central Namaqualand (Williamson, 2010; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist; JSTOR).
