Quaqua armata subsp. maritima flower

The flowers of Quaqua armata subsp. maritima grow in fascicles on short pedicels from upper stem parts. Flowers tend to open all at the same time.

The five-pointed star-shape of the corolla has purple-brown to blackish purple lobes, the outer half of the flower. The inner half of the corolla is pale yellow with purple dots and papillae on the cup surface. The lobes are slightly wrinkled, not the cup.

The cup-shaped outer corona has five uneven scallops in a ring, about as tall as the staminal column and alternating with five pairs of tiny teeth. The inner corona comprises five thin, oblong lobes with notched tips, bent over the anthers and not exceeding them.

An ovoid bud with pointed tip and longitudinal ridges is visible next to the flower in picture. It is cream with maroon spots that become dense along the ridges (Frandsen, 2017; White and Sloane, 1937; iNaturalist).
