Freesia refracta inflorescence

The inflorescence of Freesia refracta grows in a mostly horizontal or flexed down spike in which all the flowers are on the same side of the axis, pointing in the same direction. The spike axis is scalloped and sometimes branched.

The specific name, refracta, is derived from the Latin re- meaning back and frangere meaning to break, referring to the inflorescence axis shape.

Each flower is subtended by a small, dark-tipped bract. The flowers bear a spicy fragrance. The buds towards the tip of the inflorescence in picture have dark upper parts (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
