Lampranthus coralliflorus flowers

The flowers of Lampranthus coralliflorus grow solitary or in clusters from stem-tips. The stalks are from 3 cm to 4 cm long, presenting the flowers above the leaves. The five, leaf-like sepals are slightly unequal.

Flowering happens in late spring, after rain also at other times. The flowers open during the morning and close before dusk. The photo was taken at midday in October.

The eventually woody fruit capsules have five locules and are funnel-shaped at the base. The valve wings are large, the expanding keels diverge and there are covering membranes. There are no closing bodies, but hair-like funicles (stalks of failed seeds) obstruct the seed exits (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Smith, et al, 1998; iNaturalist).
