Moraea minor

Moraea minor, previously Homeria minor, is a deciduous, cormous perennial reaching 10 cm to 30 cm in height. The corm is covered in a blackish, netted tunic.

One long, narrowly strap-shaped leaf is borne annually next to the flower stem. The leaf trails and is channelled, lacking a midrib.

The species is found in the southwest of the Western Cape, from the Gifberg to the Cape Peninsula. The photo was taken on the Piketberg Mountain.

The habitat is sandy flats and lower slopes. The plant is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning and Goldblatt, 1996; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
