Pelargonium carnosum subsp. carnosum buds

Dark red knobs are conspicuous a little behind the buds of Pelargonium carnosum subsp. carnosum, like insect knee-joints. This is where the upper sepal forming a hollow spur joins the top of the pedicel. The red colour is repeated at the base of the buds.

The pedicels or flower stalks, are longish and softly fleshy. Sparse and variably hairs also variable in length cover about all parts of the umbel, apart from the corollas of the open flowers. Papery beige bracts subtend the joined bases of the flower pedicels.

The sepals of the open flower in picture curve back strongly, some of their tips touching behind (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist; iSpot).
