Tetragonia microptera flowers near a stem-tip

The tiny flowers of Tetragonia microptera are grown in groups of two to five from leaf axils. A few yellow-anthered stamens stand erect in the flower centre, the fleshy perianth lobes spreading around them. The ovary is inferior. The greenish yellow or maroon flowers become 2 mm in diameter.

Flowering happens from late winter to mid-spring. the photo was taken during August.

The four-angled fruit is a small capsule. The generic name, Tetragonia is derived from the Greek words tetros meaning four, gony meaning knee or angled and -ius meaning characteristic of or denoting resemblance, referring to the fruit shape (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Andrew, 2017; iNaturalist).
