    The soft, brown Trachyandra falcata raceme-tip is deep-coloured by narrow, pointed bracts still exceeding the buds they cover in length. Slightly below, the buds have elongated on their stalks, nearly managing to open.

    It is this soft tip of the bokkool (goat cabbage), Namakwakool (Namaqua cabbage) or veldkool (veld cabbage, a name shared with other trachyandras) that gets picked by the local people seeking vegetables for their stew. There are also other mammal herbivores that may show interest (Manning, 2007; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997).
