Cliffortia ilicifolia is a Cape Town to Gqeberha shrub bearing simple, sessile leaves. It gives the appearance of being spiny, although its spines are only small, though sharp protrusions from leaf teeth.

The plant flowers in summer. The male flower bears about forty anthers (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Privett and Lutzeyer, 2010; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984).
