Heliophila juncea flower

The flower of Heliophila juncea has four elliptic to slightly obovate petals. Flower colour is pink, purple or white. Many dark veins branch and ascend to the margins across the petal blades, the central ones here notably stronger than the rest, in midrib fashion.

There is a small white patch on each petal base where it is narrow and join the other petals around the six stamens and inside the calyx; the flower mouth is tiny. When the flower is fully open, it reaches a diameter of around 1,5 cm, but is variable in size.

Flowering happens mainly in spring, often starting late in winter and continuing to early summer, depending on conditions.

The disc-shaped, warty and slightly hairy fruit pod, called a silicle in botanical parlance, becomes 5 mm in diameter (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Manning, 2007; iSpot).
