Dyerophytum africanum flower spike

The funnel-shaped flower of Dyerophytum africanum is small and pale yellowish. Pinkish red colouring is present upon the five papery, transversally pleated or wrinkled sepals or calyx with prominent midribs or wings. The persistent sepals have five teeth at their tips.

The anthers are oblong, the ovary five-angled. The style ends in five branches. The ripe fruit dehisces in a transverse fissure around the capsule exposing seed of the five locules.

The species displays heterostyly, a phenomenon of presenting stamens and styles of different lengths (Williamson, 2010; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Eliovson, 1990; iNaturalist; http://gadi.agric.za).
