A multitude of reddish flower spikes may cover a Dyerophytum africanum bush in bloom, clustered at branch tips. The reptilian texture of the acutely pointed calyces in picture vary from pinkish red to dark maroon and brown.
A few delicate, funnel-shaped, pale flowers protrude from the calyces. Some pointy as well as rounded corolla tips are visible. Flowering happens from mid-autumn to mid-spring (Williamson, 2010; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Eliovson, 1990; iNaturalist; http://gadi.agric.za).
