The well-established, old Gazania rigida plant, aided by the incidental protective services from a conveniently situated woody shrublet, has used the opportunity to broaden its base.
The leaf tufts and flowerheads are widely spread from elongation of the multiplied stems. Since Gazania plants are generally palatable to stock and game, ample stem extension contributes to the probability of seed setting in spite of sacrifices in aid of ravenous animals (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; iNaturalist).
