Cussonia paniculata subsp. sinuata trunks may become thick and squat, but even this thin one already displays the heavy longitudinal fissuring that characterizes the tree. The colour of this bark is greyer than brown, but in different shades across the corky layers. They resemble heavily eroded canyons, too steep for earth to accumulate, except in the bottom where streams will wash it away (Coates Palgrave, 2002).
